On the afternoon of April 8, the nation’s first ideological and political education teacher-themed film, I Want to Be a Teacher, premiered at the Xishan Theater on the West Campus of GZU, marking the start of its screening across Guizhou’s higher institutions.

The film premiere was attended by Song Guangqiang, Deputy Secretary of the Education Work Committee of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee and member of the Party Leadership Group of the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education (GPDE); Yang Wei, Secretary of the CPC Committee of GZU; Luo Changjiang, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of GZU; Wang Xiaohong, Director of the Student Affairs Office (Ideological and Political Education Office) of the GPDE; and Jiang Min, Second-level Researcher of the Student Affairs Office of the GPDE. Over 600 people participated in the event, including leaders from relevant departments of GZU, Party secretaries and leaders in charge of student affairs at GZU’s colleges and schools, the university’s ideological and political education teachers, counselors, and faculty and student representatives. The event was hosted by Zhang Jie, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of GZU.

Song Guangqiang stated that in recent years, the provincial education system has consistently adhered to applying Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era to educate students, making moral education a fundamental task and integrating ideological and political education throughout the entire process of nurturing talent. The film I Want to Be a Teacher highlights the connection between the “small classroom” of ideological and political education on campus and the “larger classroom” of society, interpreting the core essence of moral education in a way that is well-received by teachers and students. It depicts the journey of young people in the new era choosing to become ideological and political education teachers, shedding light on expanding the path for setting up the “grand ideological and political education course” in Guizhou Province.

Song Guangqiang stressed that GZU, as a flagship of higher education in Guizhou Province, should encourage its teachers to strive to be “great educators” who focus on, care for, and serve students. They should vigorously promote and practice the spirit of educators, consciously undertake the aspiration to dedicate themselves to education and the ambition to strengthen the country, and contribute to the high-quality development of education in Guizhou and the construction of a strong education province with distinctive characteristics. Students should strive to be youth of a new era with ideals, endurance, and willingness to struggle and shoulder responsibilities. They should seek to become courageous dream chasers, pressing their abilities and creativity into the service of the nation’s second centenary goal.

Yang Wei noted that ideological and political courses and their teaching staff have always been a major educational aspect of great concern to General Secretary Xi Jinping. In recent years, guided by the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech on education, GZU has adhered to the original aspiration of “cultivating talent for the Party and the State” and emphasized the high-quality development of ideological and political courses led by Party building. The university has built an educational system encompassing “5-dimension education”, namely morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labor education, and fulfilling the “three aspects” of education: for all, covering the whole process, and being all-round. Through such efforts, GZU has registered a number of notable ideological and political education achievements, curriculum systems, and influential teaching teams.

Yang Wei emphasized that GZU will further consolidate its efforts to build ideological and political courses, make good use of resources to construct great platforms, and forge a distinctive team of ideological and political education teachers who are credible, respectable, reliable, willing to contribute, daring to act, and capable of achieving. The university aims to integrate the “red gene” in its ideological and political courses, stressing the role of red culture in bolstering students’ beliefs. It also underscores the value of struggle in youth development and promotes compassionate teaching for student growth. With this approach, the courses will become a transformative experience that deeply impacts students’ spirituality and inspires them to embrace their generational duties.

The audience was deeply moved by the film. Lan Zezhou, a student in journalism from the School of Communication, said that the protagonist’s deep love for the education cause and his dedication to teaching are so touching, and the story echoes the saying that it’s easier to get a teacher of classics than a teacher of man. Yin Yanan, a student in tourism management from the College of Tourism and Culture Industry, observed that the true essence of ideological and political education lies in inspiring one soul through the influence of another and putting theory into practice to empower people’s daily lives.
