On March 16th, the GZU alumnus Wang Qiao was included in the 2022 List of Fellows released by the Royal Society of New Zealand (RSNZ). There were totally 30 fellows and 4 honorary fellows in this list.
Professor Wang is a world-renowned entomologist who has made significant contributions to insect science and plant protection, particularly in the field of insect behavior and biological control of pests. His innovations in areas such as insect sexual selection, inducible reproductive investment and parasitic wasp--host interaction have provided new theoretical foundations for developing behavior-based and environmental-friendly pest control measures.
He is also a world-leading expert on research of longhorn beetles, as reflected in his book Longhorn Beetles in the World: Biology and Pest Control and other publications, which have contributed to better detection and control of longhorn beetle globally. Moreover, Wang’s discovery and introduction of parasitic wasps successfully controlled the invasion of longhorn beetles in the United States, and his professional knowledge has made significant contributions to the EU’s pest quarantine regulations and provided scientific evidence for the WTO’s recommendations on international market access.
He has been appointed as a member of expert groups and committees in many countries and international organizations. His outstanding research achievements have been recognized as world-class by the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission, earning him the prestigious Distinguished Scientist Award of the Entomological Society of America.
As a student of Grade 1977 at GZU majoring in Plant Protection Program at the College of Agriculture, Professor Wang has been introduced to GZU as a high-level “migratory” talent and contributed to the development of this discipline at GZU since 2012.
